THE RED PHONE

THE RED PHONE

Defying Political Orders
& Restoring Faith In The Media

We joined forces with a national TV station and developed a campaign where we fought for media freedom and independence. This project won a Silver Lion at Cannes Lions and helped defy political orders by restoring faith in the media. Back in 2015 freedom of speech was restricted in our country while media were divided according to political parties that controlled them. A wiretapping scandal proved the direct influence politicians had on mass media via telephone and our client, Telma Television, wanted to make sure every citizen knows they remain truly INDEPENDENT.

This campaign was proof that, like our dear Dragan Sakan used to say, the idea is the strongest currency. We had no budget for developing the campaign, but the idea behind it and the timing were perfect. Sometimes, all we need is the right idea at the right time.

A single red phone was used in the studio during prime-time news which rang during live news broadcast in order to present the interruption of news ordered by the political parties. The news anchors ignored the ringing and hung up the phone to show that Telma TV does not accept any political pressure while presenting the news. The fight for freedom of speech continued unabated with a successful outcome. The biggest proof of success was Telma TV’s remarkable 250% growth in ratings.

A Simple Red Phone Got Everyone Talking About Freedom Of Speech.

Back in 2015 when we launched this campaign on Telma TV, there was serious media pressure from political parties and while we never succumbed and stayed true to ourselves, there were restrictions on our freedom of speech. We practically had no budget for any campaign that could shed light on our efforts to remain truly independent, but luckily New Moment came up with the genius idea of the Red Phone. It was an honor to be part of this project.
